At Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics, we are committed to providing a welcoming, friendly and unintimidating atmosphere for our young patients. Our pediatric dentists know how to handle the unique needs of children, which is one reason we offer sedation dentistry for patients who need it. If your child is afraid of the dentist or has difficulty sitting still for procedures, ask us about our sedation dentistry options!
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for My Child?
Sedation is not necessary or appropriate for all patients, but it can be a good option for many children. Sedation allows the patient to relax, alleviating the anxiety that often comes with dental procedures. Sedation can also be very effective for children with special needs and those who have difficulty sitting still for procedures.
Going to the dentist can be frightening, especially for younger children who don’t understand what’s happening. Unfamiliar smells, the sound of tools, the proximity of doctors – these can all be very intimidating. Sedation eliminates this fear.
Many people develop a phobia of the dentist from a bad experience during childhood. Sedation dentistry can help to prevent this. By creating a relaxed, positive environment for our young patients, we can lay the foundation for long-term oral health.
Oral Sedation vs Laughing Gas
We utilize two main types of sedation. Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is a gas-based method good for alleviating mild to moderate anxiety. Oral sedation uses oral medication – delivered in a pill or liquid form – and provides a deeper level of sedation. It is a good choice for children with severe anxiety or those who cannot wear the nose mask necessary to deliver Nitrous Oxide.
Multiple types of oral sedation medication can be used. At Smiles for Kids, our dentists are certified in sedation dentistry for children and know how to select the proper medication and dosage for your child’s needs.
