As a pediatric facility, Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics is certified to provide sedation dentistry for kids. This is a service you won’t find at other sedation dentists, and it’s one of the many ways we work to create a relaxed, inviting and unintimidating atmosphere for our young patients.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation is different from anesthesia. While a general anesthetic can numb the mouth and prevent pain during dental work, it does nothing to calm the patient. Sedation, meanwhile, is used to eliminate anxiety or help a patient to calm down so that procedures can be performed.

Multiple sedatives can be used in a dental office. In general, we provide oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide, depending on the needs of an individual patient.

In some cases we may even recommend hospital dentistry.  This is usually reserved for extreme cases or delicate procedures.  With hospital dentistry the child would check in to the hospital for an out patient surgery.  The child would be put under general anesthesia to complete all of the necessary work by one of our Board Certified Pediatric Specialist.  After a short recovery from the anesthesia the child would return home in the same day with specific aftercare instructions provided by your specialist.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry for Kids

For kids, sedation dentistry can be especially helpful when they have trouble sitting still, are too young to understand a dentist’s instructions or have trouble with anxiety.  We understand that visiting a dentist can be frightening, especially when a child cannot understand exactly what is happening during a procedure. Sedation can help with this.

When a child is sedated, she will be awake and responsive but deeply relaxed. Afterward, the sedative should wear off quickly, though the child may be sleepy and wish to nap. Nausea can sometimes be a side effect as well.  Your dentist will let you know what to expect and provide instructions for care before and after the appointment.
