Orthodontic treatment is a process that can take several years. At Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics, it’s important to us that our patients and their families understand what to expect, and we’re happy to answer your questions about the process.
Orthodontics occurs in phases. We begin each case with a planning stage, beginning with a consultation and exam. We will examine your child’s mouth and take castings or bite impressions as necessary to build a model of their current dentition. We may also take x-rays, photographs and computer-generated images to form a clear image of what we’re working with so the appropriate treatment can be determined.
Our staff will also talk to you in detail about the cost of the orthodontic treatment including insurance coverage, out of pocket cost and financing options. In many cases you will be done paying for your braces before treatment is complete.
Once a treatment plan has been formed, we will enter the active phase of orthodontic treatment. Depending on your child’s needs, this may involve braces and other orthodontic appliances. These will need to be fitted initially, and routine visits will allow us to check the progress of treatment and make adjustments.
The third phase is the retention phase. Here, the teeth have been correctly aligned and the appliances are removed. In order to hold teeth in position and allow them to become more firmly affixed, we will use a custom retainer molded to fit the child’s mouth. We’ll provide you with instructions for when the retainer should be used and how long it needs to be worn.
If you have additional questions about orthodontics or would like to schedule a consultation, contact us today. We’ll be happy to explain our process and let you know what you can expect from your child’s individual situation.
