Orthodontic treatment is an investment in your child’s future. Repairing dentition issues and creating perfect teeth is a slow process, however, and our team at Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics knows how important it is to understand what’s happening every step of the way.
One question we’re asked often is how long a child might need to wear braces or how soon results can be seen. The answer varies depending on a number of factors, including the severity of problems and the type of device used.
In general, you can expect to wait a few weeks between the initial exam and the first fitting of braces. This gives us time to examine the x-rays, photographs and models we may make of the child’s mouth and plan treatment. It also allows us to fit the child with separators, which will make room for the bands of the braces.
Once the braces are initially fitted, you can expect a checkup every 6 to 8 weeks. We’ll make adjustments at these appointments to ensure consistent progress.
In general, braces are worn between 12 and 24 months. A retainer will be worn for roughly the same length of time after the braces are removed, and some patients do best when they continue to wear a retainer for a longer period.
