Braces are the most common orthodontic appliance, and they can be used to correct a number of dentition problems. If your child needs orthodontic work to correct crooked teeth, gaps or dental misalignment, Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics can help. We’ll create a personalized treatment plan for your child’s needs and let you know what to expect throughout the process.
What to Expect from Treatment
We’ll begin with a consultation and examination, where we’ll get to know your child and assess his or her needs. If braces and other orthodontic appliances are necessary, we will discuss your options with you; in most cases, we find that traditional metal braces are the most affordable and effective treatment for a variety of dentition problems.
We will fit the child with braces, which will require routine adjustments so that they can remain effective. This means that there will be multiple follow-up visits. Braces are generally worn from one to three years.
After the braces are removed, your child will be fitted with a retainer. This is a custom-molded device designed to hold the teeth in place so that they will become permanently affixed in their corrected position. The retainer is generally worn for the same length of time as the braces.
If other types of orthodontic appliances, such as headgear or bite plates, are required, your orthodontist will discuss the treatment with you to let you know what to expect.
