What to Expect When Getting Braces

Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics takes the fear out of getting braces. We create a friendly environment to reduce anxiety, and our orthodontists help you understand what to expect during every phase of bite correction and/or dentition alignment treatment.

Our Personalized Orthodontic Treatment Process

At Smiles for Kids, we know that no two patients have the same orthodontic needs. So, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to correcting dentition issues, like gaps, crooked teeth or misaligned bites. Yet, every customized orthodontic treatment is a process that takes time to achieve results.

When you choose Smiles for Kids for your pediatric orthodontic services, you can expect:

    Personalized consultation
We use a variety of orthodontic appliances to alter mouth shape and teeth position. We will determine which appliance(s) will work best for you.

Most patients do respond well to traditional metal braces, making them our most common and affordable treatment option.

    Initial fitting
If braces are the best option for you, we will schedule an appointment for your orthodontist to install the braces hardware. For most patients, this appointment takes one to two hours.

    Periodic adjustments
Your teeth will shift in response to the constant, gentle pressure from your braces. As a result, your braces will need to be adjusted to keep teeth moving into the proper position. How many and how often you need follow-up visits depends on how quickly your teeth shift, but in general, adjustments are done every four to six weeks.

    Braces removal
When your teeth have reached their ideal position—usually after one to three years of wearing braces—you no longer need braces, so your orthodontist will remove them. This appointment also takes between one and two hours.

    Treatment after Braces Are Removed
To make results from your braces “stick,” you need to wear a custom-fit retainer to keep teeth in place while your mouth fully heals. Generally, a retainer is worn for about as long as you had braces, so between one and three years.

Our orthodontists and hygienists will make sure you know what to expect and how to care for your braces and teeth during every phase of treatment.
