Getting Braces: What You Need to Know

Albuquerque Orthodontics for Kids

For many kids, getting braces is a rite of passage. But, it can also be a nerve-wracking experience. Your child may be concerned with how they will look or how they will feel.

At Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics, we are committed to making the process of getting braces comfortable and fun! Our orthodontists are passionate about getting kids excited about their oral health while providing an outstanding level of care.

How Braces Work

Braces work by placing pressure on the teeth for a duration of time, portrait of hispanic girlcausing the teeth to slowly align. Depending on your child’s orthodontic evaluation, your child may need to wear rubber bands to correct alignment or headgear.

At Smiles for Kids Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer traditional metal braces for kids.

Most kids have braces for about two years, depending on their unique treatment plan. Our orthodontists will perform maintenance and checkups every 6-8 weeks to assess your child’s orthodontic progress.

Preparing to Get Braces

If your child is getting braces, it is important to be prepared. Having braces, especially metal braces, means that your child will need to be more vigilant about their oral health. Certain foods can cause damage, including:

  • Corn on the cob
  • Sticky candy, like caramel
  • Gum
  • Popcorn

Try to stay away from these foods if your child is getting metal braces. Also, you may consider investing in a water pick, which will clear food trapped in between teeth with less hassle than floss.

Soreness is expected with all types of braces, but this will soon pass. Stick to soft foods for a few days, like oatmeal and ice cream. Our orthodontists can give you some ideas on how to minimize discomfort!
